Going 3D

Over the last few months I’ve pushed the direction of my collages to create ones that have more depth or are more “3D”. I’ve mounted some of the abstract shapes on foam core to create a floating feeling and I’m pretty hooked; 2D collage almost feels lifeless in comparisoin! My first attempt was a big one at 18”x24” (below) that my interpretation of a collection of galaxies.

Since then, my collages have been a bit smaller, a lot of that hinges on finding affordable shadow box frames, which can be really expensive. I’ve pivoted from my Proginoskes theme and have been created colorful abstractions inspired by the cosmos. I like listening to Neil de Grasse Tyson’s Star Talk podcast.

Birth Of A Star, 12”x16”, framed. (Sold).

Just like my paintings, I like creating layers of shapes in complimentary colors to get lost in. It can take days, sometimes a few weeks, to create a composition that I’m satisfied with. I’ll spend all day creating what I think is the best arrangement but then show up the next day and completely rearrange everything. Yes, the process can feel a little neurotic but it’s also like putting together a jigsaw puzzle and it’s a process that I love getting lost in.
